Concerned Residents of the City of Medicine Hat

We demand Transparency, Accountability and Tax Savings passed on to tax payers

Whats going on?

Many households and businesses in Medicine Hat are struggling with the high taxes and utility fees imposed by the City. The City has been spending millions more each year compared to other cities, even those with larger populations. These expenditures are labeled as employee and other expenses in the City’s financial statements. Where is this money going? Who is receiving it? When a group of concerned residents has sought clarification, they’ve either been ignored or stonewalled. Why, in the midst of a recession, is the City increasing employee pay every year? Are City employees taking the lion’s share of the profits from the power generation business for their own gain? Are salaries and compensation excessive? Are expensive contracts and systemic overspending benefiting only a few?
Now, City employees are holding meetings to discuss transferring the City’s main revenue-generating assets to a holding company. Why? Is this an attempt to reduce transparency and accountability? Are there improper or ill-gotten gains at play? Are these decision-makers preparing to sell the assets, depriving the City and its taxpayers of future income? The City has announced a legal notice under the Municipal Government Act for June 24, 2025—Why is it being fast-tracked now? Is this happening because many residents are asking tough questions? Typically, a major asset transfer or sale would be the subject of months, if not years, of public discussion and consultation.

What we want

1

An audit to be completed by an outside auditor chosen and answerable to the residents of Medicine Hat.

2

Removal of any employee or elected offical within the Municipal Government not providing transparent answers to Taxpayers.

3

Immediate Cessation of continued discussions of preparing the sale of City (taxpayer) owned assets through the use of a holding company reducing accountability and depriving taxpayers of future benefits.

4

An immediate freeze of new hires, pay increases and non-essential spending, including make-work projects.

Our Goals

To ensure our municipal government has strong control over spending and managing the gas plants which generate approximately $400 Million in revenue per year.  Any profits to be used to reduce taxes, plant upgrades,  ensure a decomissioning fund is available in the future, reduction of municipal debt and to ensure key city works are completed.

How much is $100 Million in savings per year?

$1,580.50

per person

$3,674.31

per household
